DCEU star Henry Cavill actually doesn’t mind wild Superman rumors because he sees it as proof of fan excitement. Cavill became a household name after playing Clark Kent/Superman in 2013’s Man of Steel, the movie that kicked off the DCEU. Cavill has since appeared in two additional DCEU films, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016 and Justice League in 2017. All three of Cavill’s DCEU films were helmed by Zack Snyder (with Justice League as a slight exception because of Joss Whedon taking over halfway through), and when Snyder left the franchise, Cavill’s future as Superman became uncertain.

Because Cavill’s next movie as Superman hasn’t been named, rumors have swirled for years now about whether or not he is still associated with the franchise. Back in 2018, the rumors suggesting Cavill had officially exited the DCEU prompted his agent to issue a statement refuting those claims. Things remained at a standstill up until recently, when reports emerged that Cavill is in talks to once again play Superman, though not for another Man of Steel movie. Instead, he’ll likely cameo in films like Shazam 2 and Aquaman 2.
Clearly, Cavill is no stranger to rumors about his character. That topic in particular came up while he was talking to Variety, and Cavill said that the rumors “get wilder and wilder by the day.” Cavill admitted that they can, at times, get frustrating with “people stating stuff as fact. Like, ‘No, that’s not the case. That hasn’t happened, and that conversation isn’t happening.’” However, he then continued and explained why he often sees Superman rumors as a good thing:
But the important thing is that people are excited about it, and I think it’s important to be excited about a character like Superman. Superman is a fantastic character. If people are chatting about it, and even if they’re making stuff up, it’s okay, because that means they want to see the character again. And in an ideal world, I would absolutely love to play the character again.
The speculation among fans will likely persist until they get a real, official update regarding Superman’s future. Since those initial reports that hinted at Cavill’s return, there hasn’t been anything new about his potential appearances. This doesn’t necessarily mean nothing’s happening in the DCEU with Cavill, but it does leave the door wide open for more rumors. For his part, Cavill has consistently indicated he would love to play Superman again, and that alone has given fans hope that his time as the iconic hero isn’t finished.
Perhaps some news of Cavill’s DCEU future could arrive during DC FanDome. The virtual convention will take place on August 22, and it promises to hold some major updates about future DC projects. At the very least, it’ll feature some teases about Zack Snyder’s Justice League (AKA the Snyder Cut), which will arrive on HBO Max next year and will definitely star Cavill as Superman. Cavill himself is excited about seeing the Snyder Cut, and it’s very safe to say fans feel the same.
